Risk Assessment for Hot Work

A practical checklist covering permits and PPE.

Define the job before it starts

Identify the task, work area, affected people and responsible persons. This checklist supports preparation; it does not replace a site-specific risk assessment or permit.

Fire and surrounding areas

Assess combustible materials and adjacent areas that sparks could reach. Have competent people plan isolation, permits and fire watch arrangements, including completion checks and responsibility for releasing the area.

Fume and nearby workers

Consider the work method and source extraction rather than relying only on PPE. Assess respiratory protection for the task and wearer and include nearby workers in the exposure assessment.

Equipment and records

  • Consider eye, face, hand and body protection together.
  • Check instructions and compatibility between equipment.
  • Report defects and follow replacement procedures.
  • Record permits, checks and completion approval.
